FGF21 and nutritional regulation of energy balance in obesity and fatty liver
My lab works on the regulation of energy balance in relation to the pathogenesis and treatment of obesity. Our current major focus is the regulation of both energy expenditure and nutrient partitioning and the role of the omnikine FGF21 in this process. We are also studying the pathways that result in fatty liver which contributes to the morbidity and mortality associated with the obese state. From a nutritional standpoint, we are interested in the contribution of fructose and sucrose to the development of fatty liver. Additionally, we are investigating the regulation of energy balance through the central nervous system with our primary focus being on hypothalamic neuropeptides. My lab is involved in both basic research with mouse models of obesity as well as several translational studies.
